What Do You Need to Scrap a Car? Documents, ID and Payment Explained (2026 UK Guide)
The short answer: to scrap a car in the UK you need your V5C logbook (or a way to prove ownership if it is lost), a valid photo ID and a proof of address dated within the last three months. A licensed scrap buyer must check your identity and must pay you by bank transfer or cheque, never in cash. Once the car is scrapped you tell the DVLA, and you should receive a Certificate of Destruction.
That is the whole process in one paragraph. The rest of this guide explains each step, what happens if something is missing, and how to tell a properly licensed buyer from one who will leave you exposed.
The documents checklist
Before collection, have these ready:
- Your V5C logbook. This proves you are the registered keeper. If you have lost it, you can still scrap the car; see how to scrap a car without a V5C.
- Valid photo ID. We accept a valid UK passport, a passport from a European Economic Area country, or a UK biometric immigration document.
- Proof of address dated within the last three months. A credit or debit card statement, a bank or building society statement, a council tax statement or demand letter, or a gas, electricity or water bill. Mobile phone bills are not accepted.
- Your bank details, so we can pay you by bank transfer.
You can upload your ID and V5C through our quote system when you get your price, or send them to us on WhatsApp. Doing this up front means nothing holds up collection on the day.
Why a scrap buyer has to check your ID
This is not us being awkward. The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 says a scrap metal dealer must not take in scrap metal without verifying the seller's full name and address against reliable, independent documents. A dealer who skips this check is committing an offence, and so is anyone who gives a false name or address when handing over scrap.
The rule exists to stop stolen vehicles and metal being laundered through scrapyards. For you, it is also a quick test of who you are dealing with.
How you get paid, and why cash is a red flag
It is illegal for a scrap metal dealer in England or Wales to pay for scrap in cash. Payment has to be by bank transfer or a non-transferable cheque. The law also counts paying "in kind", with goods or services, as payment, so that is ruled out too.
We pay by bank transfer within 24 hours of collection. Cars collected on a Friday afternoon are paid on the following working day, which is normally the Monday unless it is a bank holiday.
Our view is simple: if a buyer offers you cash for a car that is going to be scrapped, or does not ask for your ID, walk away. Either they are not licensed or they are ignoring the rules that protect you. If that car later turns up abandoned or used in an offence, you want a clear paper trail showing it went to a licensed facility. Our guide on how to spot a licensed vehicle recycler covers the other checks worth making.
What to do with the V5C on the day
When your car is collected, hand the V5C to us but keep the yellow section, headed "sell, transfer or part-exchange your vehicle to the motor trade". This is the slip you use to tell the DVLA.
Telling the DVLA
As an Authorised Treatment Facility, we record the vehicle with the DVLA for you. You should still tell the DVLA yourself that the car has gone to a scrapyard, either online on GOV.UK or by posting the yellow slip. The DVLA can fine you up to £1,000 if you do not.
When you post the slip, our details are: Take My Car Away / Autospares and Salvage Ltd, Station House, Station Road, Raunds, Northants, NN9 6BX.
Once the DVLA knows the car has been scrapped, any vehicle tax still on it is cancelled and a refund for the remaining full months is sent to the registered keeper. Tax cannot be passed on to anyone else, so there is nothing to gain by leaving it.
The Certificate of Destruction
When a car or light van is fully scrapped at an Authorised Treatment Facility, a Certificate of Destruction is issued within seven days. It is your proof that the vehicle has been destroyed and that you are no longer liable for it, including for vehicle tax and traffic penalties.
Not every vehicle we take in is crushed. If a car is good enough to be repaired and returned to the road, no certificate is issued, because the vehicle has not been destroyed. Where a certificate is issued, we can email you a copy on request. You can read more about this stage in what really happens to your car after we collect it.
Getting the car ready
Paperwork is half the job. The other half is the car itself:
- It needs to be complete for the full quoted price. That means the engine and gearbox, battery, wheels and suspension, and a genuine catalytic converter. Missing parts or an aftermarket catalyst can lead to deductions.
- Take out your belongings and any rubbish. Only car parts can stay in the vehicle. Non-car waste, including vapes, carries a disposal fee of £80 plus VAT.
- Make sure it can be reached. The car must be rolling on its wheels and accessible to our recovery vehicle.
- Sort a private plate first. If you want to keep a personalised registration, apply to take it off the car before it is scrapped.
We do not buy LPG-converted vehicles or motorbikes.
