Insurance Write-Off Categories Explained: What Cat A, B, S and N Mean for Your Car (2026 UK Guide)
If your insurer has written your car off, it will fall into one of four categories: Cat A, Cat B, Cat S or Cat N. Cat A and Cat B vehicles must be crushed and can never legally return to the road. Cat S and Cat N vehicles can be repaired and re-registered, but only once the damage is properly recorded with the DVLA. In practice, for many Cat S and Cat N cars, particularly older or lower-value vehicles, scrapping is still the simplest and safest option once the insurance payout has been settled.
What the categories actually mean
The categories were updated by the Association of British Insurers in 2017, replacing the old Cat C and Cat D system. Here is what each one means today:
- Cat A (destroyed): The vehicle is so badly damaged that even the parts cannot be safely reused. It must be crushed in full at an Authorised Treatment Facility.
- Cat B (break for parts): The body shell cannot go back on the road, but usable parts can be salvaged first. The shell itself must still be crushed.
- Cat S (structural damage): The vehicle has structural or chassis damage. It can be repaired and driven again, but only after a full inspection and DVLA re-registration.
- Cat N (non-structural damage): The damage does not affect the structure, for example electrical faults or cosmetic panel damage. These cars are often the cheapest to repair, but many are still not worth the cost once labour and parts are factored in.
Different situations, different next steps
Not everyone ends up in this position for the same reason, and the right next step depends on which one applies to you.
Your car has just been written off after an accident. Your first job is to settle the claim with your insurer and get confirmation of which category applies. Once you have the payout and the paperwork, you are free to decide what happens to the vehicle. If you would rather not deal with a repair, our how it works guide explains the collection process from quote to payment.
You have been offered the car back by your insurer. Some insurers will let you keep a written-off vehicle and pay you a reduced settlement instead of the full value. If you choose this route with a Cat S or Cat N car, weigh the repair cost honestly against the car's true worth. Our guide on whether your car is worth repairing walks through that comparison.
You have bought a car privately and later discovered it is a write-off. This happens more often than people expect, particularly with Cat S and Cat N vehicles that have been repaired to a poor standard and sold on without full disclosure. Always check a vehicle's history before buying, and if you find yourself with an unroadworthy write-off, scrapping it properly protects you from any liability for its future use.
Your car failed its MOT and turned out to be uneconomical to fix. This is different from an insurance write-off, but the same repair-versus-scrap decision applies. See our guide to the most common MOT failures for more on this.
Our view
A Cat A or Cat B vehicle has only one legal destination, and that is a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility. For Cat S and Cat N cars, the decision is more personal, but we would always encourage getting an honest repair quote before committing. If the numbers do not stack up, scrapping the vehicle properly, with full DVLA notification and a Certificate of Destruction, closes the matter cleanly and safely. Trying to sell on a write-off without disclosing its history, or repairing it informally, is where owners run into legal and financial trouble later.
